I was having a kōrero with a wahine, who told me that the rohe of Nga Puhi was, to her knowledge, all of the area north of Auckland. I enlightened her that there are a multitude of Iwi in the North, other than hers. Ngāti Kahu is one of them, I have also included a photo of the old whare. The new whare is being built, shown on a previous post, Te RāApa, Wed 10. Te Pātu, e ngā wā o mua, was built to stop Nga Puhi from advancing on Te Aupouri.

Checked out the Project Gutenburg online book catalogue where I could access free ebooks. Project Gutenberg focuses on 'light books,' such as Peter Pan etc, 'heavy books' such as the Bible etc, and 'reference books' like Dictionaries and the like. Out of the 100 top picks, there were only a few books that grabbed my attention. One of them was 'Beyond Good and Evil' by Friedrich Nietzsche. There were various ways that the books could be downloaded as shown in the diagram on the right, I did find it really easy and fast to download. From Gutenburg an ebook can be downloaded, read on screen, CD's, DVD's and readers. I liked the look of Amazons"Kindle" although Gutenberg also has a reader, and the ebooks from Gutenberg could also be downloaded to a Blackberry, and probably to other phones of the same type. What I did find interesting was this graph from eBooks.com.

Danielle, you keep finding all of these cool readings. I so love them, they relate so well to libraries, "Taming Technolust: Ten Steps for Planning in a 2.0 World." by Michael Stephens.

I ventured into Podcasting today. Having anything for free is a really a great bargain, but then like anything, it can chew through the broadband. I've experience the bliss of watching "You Tube" for ages and then afterwards realising that I'd used up so much of my broadband, that I had to increase my monthly usage (more money). I ventured into 'i tunes' and managed to get a few podcasts, and then went into my bloglines and added some similar ones, Te Ahi Kaa, Flight of the Conchords, John Cleese, Jackie Brown,
At the movies and The Moth. It was easier to add them via the URL, so that is what I've done. What I did like was a this page on the Christchurch Library website, which gives a really clear explanation of what podcasting is all about.

We were asked to embed a You Tube video. I have done quite a few in previous posts, so this isn't new to me. I was going to choose another lovely little one singing, and there are quite a few. However, it must be the time, or this 'wet, wet, wet weather' which led me to choose the All Blacks doing 'Kapa o Pango.' This haka was revived by Derek Lardelli, and led by Rico Gear, both of whom are Ngati Porou.
We were also asked how this site could help our patrons. I think that this could be used as another resource especially in research, and it could also be found that some people (myself included) are more visually inclined. How did I put my video on my post? (1) Go to the You Tube site and after having chosen the type of video that I wanted to watch, (2) by putting it in the 'search bar.' I then played it. The 'embed code' came up on the right of the video. (3) I copied the code. (4) Went back to my post, then 'pasted' the code in the panel where I'm writing at this moment. (5) Just under this I wrote my message. Publish post. Done. Hope this helps anyone who needs it.

It's raining again!! and today, I don't feel like putting anymore 'rain pictures' on my post.

So because I put Sookie on my post yesterday, I've decided to put our dog on today's post. She died a couple of years ago, but we still miss Bird, and yes her name was Birdie.

Had a look through the Web 2.0 awards and I like some of the favourites like Bebo , You Tube, Google Earth, as well as Geni, a geneology site. I looked into the Dostoc site, another place that has document templates, anything to make life easier. Finally, the last one I've tried, (for now) was G2Web2, it is awesome, it's a web directory, so I can find just about any site that I want.

The Gadget application is awesome!!! All you do is (1)go to the 'customize bar' at the top right of your blog. Then (2) go to the 'gadget link.' (3) Open it up and in the top right hand corner, is a search bar, (4) type in 'Maori,' (for example) then enter. I found 'He Kupu o Te Ra' that's how one of us got Indian music and another got a gadget that helps her play cords on a guitar.

This cat has 'adopted us.' My daughter calls her Sakura, and I call it Sookie, because all she does it screech whenever anyone goes past, even while she is eating.
Yes, done the Zoho, I created the slide show that's at the top of the page. It was quite easy. I like the idea of Google Documents (there's a video at the bottom of my blog). One option is basically writing a document off line, then putting it online, for you and others (that you've invited) to add/edit the document, in this way, there are no longer multiple copies of the that doc. Love the templates as well.

Woohoo - #17 and Week 7

Yay, on the final leg of Library 2.0. We've been asked to check out the bebo page that was set up by Auckland City Libraries Bebo and to send a request to be a friend, as well as a link to that Bebo. In order to do this I had to set up 2 bebo accounts, Hikurangi Waiapu and Ataahua Sunshine Bebo. (Both can be accessed through the above link). The first bebo was set up so that I could access the ACL bebo and the second one I set up because I wanted another account to be able to comment on the first account, and not only that, I couldn't turn down the name of Ataahua (beautiful) sunshine. My sense of humour came out to play, considering we've had about 2 days of sunshine in the past 3 weeks, ok, ok, I'm exaggerating...4 days. I have also left a message on the Hennepin-County-Library facebook.

I joined MySpace.com - Hikurangi and this was a site that I haven't visited before, I liked this site, after putting in Bic Runga's name, her page came up with a blog. Bic's babies name is Joseph, she writes that she was worried that he still didn't have a name at 4 months. Bic's site also has some of her recordings which I added onto my page. The purpose of Face Book - Hikurangi ,is to meet people that have been in your life, such as people that you have worked with or people that you have been to school with. I think this is a moot point because I had a non-de-plume, and knew no-one. I can see the value in having a face book page if I would want to catch up with others, and I guess it is the more 'mature' page, However, I have a personal bebo account, which I have to keep in touch with whanau that live overseas or back home. Bebo, unlike blogging or some other sites can be made into a private site, and I can choose who 'visits' my bebo page.

We've been asked what we've discovered and learnt. Well, so much, in such a small amount of time, I wish that we had more time to fully discover all of the different sites and much more. I am really excited about what I've learnt in the past month, considering, that I didn't even know how to do a blog in JUNE. Incredible, I have leant so much.

Now what frustrated me? Where do I start? (1) The problems with our staff pc's not being able to access some of the sites. As well, I would have done a fair amount of work and then it would all disappear?? Where?? I wouldn't know until I got home and checked it out on my own pc, (2) working at home. (3) All of the different sites we had to sign up for, at last count, I have opened 20 different accounts, and those are only the ones, I've remembered, as well as trying to remember the passwords. (4) And finally, another biggie, not being able to take photos of people!!! I had to be really inventive as to how to take photos of people without taking photos of their faces (unless I had their permission). But then that was part of the challenge, and it was really great to be able to find 'one beautiful thing' to photograph each day. Sometimes, I just couldn't choose out of the many photos taken, and those were the days when I would put two (or more) photos on the page.

I have already mentioned the social networking site that I prefer, which is Bebo, it is the site that I know, and because a lot more of my whanau are on Bebo. Where to from here? I would like to spend more time on sites such as Flickr - Hikurangi and MySpace as well as the toys (generators) and any of the sites that are relevant to photography, as well as learning much more about Library 2.0.

I found it easier to understand all of these different Library 2.0 concepts via video rather than reading the instructions, in particular the Common craft videos, that are at the bottom of my page. As well as those videos, Meredith Farkas, in her video, offered some really great suggestions, about Library 2.0:

to embed services where customers are
to meet changing user needs
blogs: to communicate in an informal way and to get back comments, where guidelines had been set.
Flickr; highlighting collections
RSS: get messages via txt, via bloglines
Wiki: share/collect knowledge to put our stuff out there and make it attractive
Social bookmarking: tags; sharing info with other libraries/library staff.

At this time, I'm looking forward to all of the tools that are becoming available for those of us who work in libraries. I don't see it as a 'threat' to our books, or collections. I see it as another area, an area we would all be wise to look into.

I've just finished reading the OCLC Next Space Newsletter – Web 2.0: Where will the next generation of the web it take libraries? and found the different readings really interesting. Dr Wendy Schultz succinctly writes that (Library 2.0, is where) a futures perspective asks us to reconnect this dialogue to the grand sweep of time from the treasured past to the adventure of the future - and to put people and meaning at the centre of our concerns". I totally agree with her statement. I didn't find it easy to watch the suggested video in our discovery resource list, so I ended up watching the You Tube video Building Academic Library 2.0 with Meredith Farkas. She was clear about the benefits and some of the pitfalls of the Library 2.0, which I found fascinating .

Ok, ok, I adore these little ones, and I do like the photographs in the Te Ao Hou magazine as well.

WOW, I've found the 'gadgets' that are available with our blogs, yehaa. I've added 'He kupu o te Ra,' awesome, as well as a calendar (that's the control person in me), Inspirational Quotes and Pictures, I do like quotes, and photographs, well enough said. That's why I've got Places to See. The reason why I added 'Things to ponder' is because I enjoy those little titbits of info, even though they had to be pretty good, because they came with advertising and I was on the point of not adding them. I've also found all of these library related gadgets, search answers etc, fantastic. Learning to sign, when I have a spare moment. Near the bottom of my blog are Common Craft videos on RSS, Wiki, Social Bookmarking and Podcasting.

Had dinner with my dear friend Kimmi.

Found my way around the Delicious site, so much so that I created a Hikurangi's Bookmarks on Delicious account, and added a few bookmarks. I can see the value in using this site as a resource, where I could find new sites by using the tags of others which would lead me to those sites. As well as this, my network badge is in the side bar.

Joined Technorati Profile as previously mentioned and find it really interesting to be able to find the most popular blogs, searches, books, movies, videos and much more. Tagging is awesome, especially because it is linked with flickr and I could search though images as well. I even managed to claim my blog, create a a watchlist, and tag the bottom of this post. So exciting.

'Haere Mai'

I found the library wiki SJCPLSubjectGuides really interesting, they were created by the Reference Librarians and are guides that led patrons to resources in the Internet, the Library and in the community. Patrons were also invited to make suggestions. What I did like was that this library had a blog and librarians could be contacted by email. Librarians could also be contacted by four different 'messenger' services. As well as taking the patron to the catalogue, like all wikis, one could edit after joining and logging in. The BookLoversWiki was more of a book review site. Library Success: A best practices wiki and library wiki examples were interesting but you had to join up to edit anything and I guess I was just tired after all of the sites, I have already joined, not that I could think of anything to edit. The YouTube video was really good and I understood wikis better after watching it, which helped me add my favourites to the Sandbox Wiki PBwiki Learning 2.0 . (Which I had done a couple of weeks ago). At that time I also go a pbwiki account. ngati-akonga pbwiki

YES!! More of the wet stuff!!
Last day of the month and just a wrap up of July. Most of the required exercises I had done and wrote about on July 13, however, there were others that I had added to my Link List and I hadn't mentioned. I've added Manukau Public Libraries;which is a RSS; Tagnautica this is a really fun application which puts words together in a fun way; Unshelved a comic based on a library and librarians, it also is interesting to see the many series; LibraryThing where a few of my chosen books are on a slide show; fd's Flickr Toys I could have (and did) spend ages playing with the many applications, Bubblr was one where I put together a series of photos (from Flickr) to create a slide show, this is at the bottom of my blog, Hocknerizer is what I used to do my blog header; Flickr: Hikurangi's Photostream I have a 'stream' of photos with Flickr, but I found Picasa Web Albums easier to use, especially when it came to my slide show at the top of the page. I also found a site called , Bravenet which was another site for more applications, I liked the idea that I could have a counter on my blog, but more so I could see at what time I had visits. I added the Technorati side show a while ago, I think it was because I'm a Matrix fan and I liked the black and green colour scheme. I have now joined Technorati Profile so that I could access heaps of info including 'the most popular blogs,' that I might one day require. A mashup that I liked was twittervision, it was a combination of Twitter, Facebook and 3D earth, it was cool to see people on the net, writing in different languages in short sentences, as it happened. Joining RADIO.BLOG.CLUB I got to choose different songs that can be played at home, but not on our work pc's. I liked searching different sites that were enjoyable and informative as well as being free. My major problem was that I had to join so many different sites and remember all of the passwords.

For those who didn’t know Aunty Mere Knight, she was involved in the Health and Community Sectors for over 50years. Her dedication and commitment to developing and supporting community, health and school groups was unsurpassed. She was very well known throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand, as well as being a very dedicated member of the Anglican Church. Evidence of Aunty Mere(s) skills in Raranga (weaving) is demonstrated by her many Tāniko and Tukutuku works which are widely displayed within organisations, marae andcommunity halls. Right up until the time she passed, she gave guidance in Tikanga and Mātauranga Maaori, and worked for Te Roopu Taurima o Manukau.

Ok, ok, I was going to put the mountain of text books that I was reading and take a photo of them, however, I decided that I would be honest and take a photo of one (of many) of the DVD's that one watches when all it does all weekend is rain, rain and then rain some more. But woohoo, we had a couple of hours of SUN. So the tv was turned off and I went out. I went past this wonderful mural painted by the schools in the community. Can anyone guess where? Then of course the rain and the wind came back, which put a real damper on the day and so it was back home to do more 'study.'

We were asked to write about anything 'technology related' that interests us. Hands down, it would have to be my digital camera. The Uniden UDC-5M. It is small, easily portable and convenient. Gone are the days when you send away for the photos to be developed, just to find on their return that half of them were blank or some other mishap had occurred. Now it is just a matter of connecting the camera to the computer and picking and choosing
what photos I want and deleting the rest. I've also got photo shop, so I can play around with all of the photos as well. Such a huge learning curve, and a matter of learning by my mistakes and spending heaps of time on the pc. Some of the other benefits with this camera is that it has a big viewer on the back of the camera, the menu is easy to decipher and the photos are really clear and crisp, well most of the time, hehe.

You must be thinking how did I take the photos of my camera with a camera that I'm promoting...we've got three similar cameras in our whanau, so I used one of the other cameras. Finally, a good thing about having a digital camera is that I can share photos with my account on Flickr: Hikurangi's Photostream

I'm also hoping that one day it'll turn into a Casio 300. So cool.

Pou Kapua is located in the Plaza adjacent to the Telstraclear Pacific Events Centre.

The "Pou Kapua Taonga", is a significant Maori/Pacific Indigenous cultural arts project. The Pou Kapua, carved from a magnificent ancient Kauri from the forests of the Iwi of Te Rarawa, stands more than seventy feet high, and is the largest totem of its type in the world.

The story of the Pou begins in the sacred house of knowledge, with depictions of our creation and our beliefs throughout. I have been having so much fun with this blogging. However, with my daily photo journal I find it hard to chose just ONE photograph per day. I am also conscious of the fact that these photographs are on the net, therefore, if the photos have people in them, I will get their (or their caregivers) permission to use them. Failing that I would try to take photos of people in a crowd. Other than all of the many different accounts that I have set up, another challenge I am having, is that I end up surfing all over the place and trying out heaps of things, of which I have put only a few of them on here. I think that the fun in all of it was finding and playing on the sites. It is really awesome.

Oh the places I have been,
and the things I have seen.

We were asked to set up a couple of internet feeds and a RSS feed. As I am a news seeker I added NZ Herald and Ataahua Māori I also have an interest in photography, so I added i heart photograph and Richard Estes. Cooking with Amy was added for that reason as well, for interest value. I wouldn't want to suggest that I am an expert in either area...yet. A couple of RSS feeds were Technorati and My Blogline the intructions on both of them were easy to follow. Our libraries could use the RSS to get up to date information and show patrons how this could be done. Then I met up again with a friend and remembered that he plays beautiful music, so added his link as well. The Broken Heartbreakers Online Also thought that I'd add another blog by some one in the music industry. Scratch Dat!

The generators were awesome. I had a play with Word clouds, Wordle - Ngati Porou all I had to do was add some words and the generator would put it all together in which ever way or whatever colours I wanted.

I tried many of the generators, some of which included the following:

The 8 ball was created with the imageGenerator , I also created a 'clippy,' that was so much fun. Words could be inserted in much the same way as 'the yeah right' slogans. I mosified Ben Bratts head on another’s body with Moosify he is such a prettiful man, especially in one of my favorite movies, Miss Congeniality with Sandra Bullock, another great actor. Magnigraph and Warholizer was where I coloured a photo in different colours, as shown above. Photos could be aged with old style and Cover Browser was when I could type words into speech bubbles of comic books.
It was lovely with an 'edge of vanity' to put myself on the front of a magazine or to be on a movie poster Be on TV Guide however, I think I missed my 'calling.'

After joining Flickr: Hikurangi's Photostream I found I could do a lot of great things with my photos through this link. fd's Flickr Toys One of which was called ‘Motivator,' I was meant to put some 'inspiration words' within the frame as well but the picture and title 'Papa Kainga' (home) alone, done it for me.

I also used fd's Flickr Toys so that I could play around with all of my photos and make my side show. I'm still not satisfied with it, so I'll play around with it and tweek it here and there, til I get it right. OK, OK it still isn't up to my satisfaction so I've ended up using a Picasa slide show.

LibraryThing The library thing was great to have a play in. The few books that I chose were only for the benefit of having to chose some books. I think if I actually had to put books on 'the shelf,' there would not be enough room. I've also put on the side bar Unshelved which is a library comic that I found interesting, our Manukau Public Libraries which needs no explanation, as well as Rollyo: Hikurangi which is a list of specified websites that I have chosen. I really think that Rollo is a great addition for the sake of accumulating relevant information in one place. As well as the previous feeds, I also added Technorati slide show, I found everything easy enough to join up and use most of the feeds, it was just trying to remember all of my user names and passwords.

Okay, that's enough of all of these words. Thank goodness a new week has started and I can go back to photographs. There should also be a rule that "one cannot fix and re-fix and re-fix and ....one's blog. hehe. That's the perfectionist in me.

Wellness CONNECTION. It's good to feel GREAT+

Karakia to open the mid-year staff event, then a Mihi to welcome us. This was followed by entertainment by theatre sportsters, hip hop dancers, and some 'volunteered' staff members. Leigh's korero encouraged us all to lead a more healthy lifestyle, and also mentioned a new mentoring programme for our young people of Manukau.
I had a great time and mean to go to the gym asap... well, next week at the latest.

I'm really enjoying this blogging as for RSS, the korero is that it is a way of getting regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS feed to whoever wants it. I found this quite easy to get into, my blogline is in my link list. This is the first blog that I have ever done, and after all of the time I have spent on this, I think that a piece, yes, and I did only have A piece, well 2 pieces at the most, was reward enough.
I find it fascinating that I can add pictures as well, and so I have decided to make a 'blog picture diary' for each day of this journey, as well as a few words, now and then. It should be interesting. Oops, I've already gone over the 50 word mark.
